Bouvet Island

Bouvet Island is a Norwegian volcanic uninhabited subantarctic island in the South Atlantic Ocean, about 2,500 km (1,500 mi) south of the coast of Africa, and 1,100 km (680 mi) west of the Prince Edward Islands. The island is named after the French explorer Jean-Baptiste Bouvet de Lozier, who discovered it on January 1, 1739.

History

Bouvet Island was first discovered on January 1, 1739 by the French explorer Jean-Baptiste Bouvet de Lozier. He was searching for a southern continent and named the island after himself. The island was uninhabited and remained unexplored for over 100 years. In 1822, the British sealer James Weddell visited the island and claimed it for Britain. However, the island was never formally claimed by any country. In 1927, Norway established a meteorological station on the island. The station was abandoned in 1965, but was reestablished in 1975.

Geography

Bouvet Island is a small, volcanic island with an area of 49 square kilometers (19 square miles). The island is surrounded by a 200-meter (660-foot) high cliff and has a central plateau. The highest point on the island is Olav V Top, which is 780 meters (2,560 feet) high. The climate on Bouvet Island is very cold and dry. The average temperature is -1.9 degrees Celsius (29.2 degrees Fahrenheit). The island receives less than 200 millimeters (8 inches) of precipitation per year.

Economy

There is no economy on Bouvet Island. The only economic activity on the island is the operation of the meteorological station.

Languages

The official language of Bouvet Island is Norwegian. However, the only language spoken on the island is English.
